JOHN FORD COLEY

By guest contributor: Christina Kennedy

Dallas-born native, John Ford Coley, brings his writing and singing expertise to the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 7:15 p.m. on the UnitedHealthcare Singer Songwriter Stage in the Eisemann Center. Best known as half of the Grammy-nominated duo, England Dan and John Ford Coley, John is a singing legend.

Listening to the Grand Old Opry and early versions of rock and roll, Coley grew up with a love of music. After high school, Coley and schoolmate Dan Seals joined what would eventually become Southwest F.O.B. and toured the Texas music scene. Their hit single “The Smell of Incense” reached number 43 on the music charts back in 1969. While in the band, Coley and Seals eventually formed their own, England Dan and John Ford Coley. Their big break came in 1972 with “Simone,” an international hit in Japan and France. The two had four Top 10 Hits and two Top 20 Hits and released three albums before disbanding in 1980.

MEDITATING ON WILDFLOWERS – HANNAH BETHEL

What exactly is “Appalachian” vocal style?

I am not sure! It’s a comment I received from music industry critic Robert Oermann on my project, “The Freedom EP.” The full quote:

“She has a very cool Appalachian vocal style. The upbeat tune is produced perfectly with plenty of open spaces between the fiddle, dobro and steel line. The accomplished singing is as impressive as the fact that she wrote or co-wrote all of the EP’s fine songs.”

This guy can be brutally honest and I wait with bated breath each time I know he’ll be reviewing my work. Read More

“NATHAN EVANS FOX – FIDDLING LICKS & RATTLIN’ RIFFS

1. What does it mean to be selected as a finalist?

My wife and I are super new to Texas, and neither of us knew too much about the music scene here before we moved to Houston. Being selected as a top ten finalist is a really exciting way to dive into the scene and get to know so many amazing songwriters and performers. Obviously, it’s a huge honor. Read More

MARILYN RUCKER – WICKED WIT OF THE WEST

Who gave you the nickname “Wicked Wit of the West” and what does it mean?

My friend Steve Brooks, who is a wonderful writer and songwriter, gave me that nickname several years back. We’ve written a few songs together, including “Let the Men Buy the Beer” and “Snot-Nosed Rag.” I think he meant it kindly, but essentially it means I’m a smart-alecky tart. Read More

MIKE P. RYAN – EVOCATIVE & SINGING FROM THE HEART

Mike P. Ryan – Top Finalist | 2017 Wildflower! Performing Songwriter Contest

1. Do you have a favorite quote, lyric, or credo that you live by?

My credo is real simple: be kind and be thankful. I do my very best to treat people the way I want to be treated and to show kindness and generosity whenever I can. I suppose the thing I try hardest to do is be thankful for what I have. I’ve seen the worst parts of the world and been to war five times. I know what real suffering looks like and I know how good I have it every day. I try never to forget that.

As a songwriter, I have a simple goal for every song–something I learned when I attended a Songwriting Seminar last summer with the legendary Songwriter Steve Earle. One of the things Steve said was “your goal as a Songwriter should be to make the listener feel the emotion you felt when you wrote the song.” He explained that when a listener shares an emotion with the Songwriter (who is a total stranger) it reminds the listener that they not alone in the world. Making that connection is something I hope to do in every song I write. Read More
