Seldom do you come across a young woman with a voice mature enough to sing jazz and blues like the greats. Lola Toben is a rare gem. Her rich vocals and lyrics are clearly influenced by her childhood favorites, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, the Moody Blues, Elton John and Billy Joel.
Toben is a composer, pianist, songwriter, singer, and music teacher. She also contributes to studio projects as a vocalist or musician. When asked about her favorite of these vocations, Lola says she loves performing best because of the connection she experiences with the audience. She says you just don’t get that in the studio.
“Music should remind people what it’s like to feel human.” – Lola Toben
Jazz is all about heartstrings. It conveys the longings, emotions, the highs and the lows like no other music can. Lola’s passion for this art is evident in every song she plays. Lola Toben was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. She began taking music lessons at age eight. By the time Lola was ten she was performing professionally for sporting events and church. Over the years Lola has led or been a member of multiple groups featuring her jazz, blues and pop talents.
Lola graduated from Webster University in 2013, Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Jazz Performance and Composition.
Lola met her husband Bryan when they were both very young. They performed locally together in their high school years and became best friends. The Tobens continue to perform together and it was Bryan who surprised Lola by entering her in the Wildflower! Festival’s Singer-Songwriter competition. Lola is excited about the competition and meeting other people in the singer-songwriter community.
